Lisa Urry

Academic Advisor

Lisa Urry has been a Professor of Biology for over 30 years, most of them at Mills College, a small liberal arts college for women in Oakland CA; Mills merged with Northeastern University in 2022. After earning a B.A. at Tufts University in Biology and French, she completed her Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Lisa has conducted research on gene expression during embryonic and larval development in sea urchins. Deeply committed to promoting opportunities in science for women and underrepresented minorities, she has taught courses ranging from introductory and developmental biology to a non-majors course called Evolution for Future Presidents. Lisa is lead author of Campbell Biology and Campbell Biology in Focus, the most widely used textbooks for AP Biology and introductory college courses. She is passionate about education and has dedicated much of her time to the science of Metacognition and helping students acquire more effective study skills.
